Lipah Beach

Lipah Beach in Amed offers an unforgettable snorkeling experience and is just a short drive from Jemeluk. We visited during our trip to Amed and loved it. You can access the beach through Vienna Beach Resort, where parking is available. Like other beaches in Amed, Lipah Beach is known for its unique black sand. What makes it even more interesting is that the beach disappears during high tide and reappears during low tide.
The Beach—Black Sand and Calm Waters
Lipah Beach is perfect for anyone looking for a peaceful and beautiful spot to relax. It’s less crowded compared to Jemeluk, making it ideal for those who want some quiet time. The black volcanic sand and clear waters make Lipah Beach a great spot for a day trip. However, it’s best to visit during low tide when the beach is fully visible.
Although Lipah Beach isn’t known for sunset views like Jemeluk, it’s perfect for daytime activities. The crystal-clear waters and quiet atmosphere make Lipah Beach a great spot to enjoy the sunshine and relax.
The Underwater World — Coral, Turtles, and Colorful Fish (Rating: ⭐️5/5)
What really sets Lipah Beach apart is its incredible underwater life. The coral reefs here are some of the healthiest and most colorful we’ve seen in Bali. The variety of fish swimming around the reefs is amazing, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot a sea turtle!
Compared to Jemeluk, the coral at Lipah Beach seems even more vibrant and well-preserved. Snorkeling here is a must for anyone visiting Amed, and the water is so clear that you can easily explore on your own. Just remember to respect the coral and avoid touching or standing on it, so we can keep this beautiful ecosystem healthy.
More Than Just Snorkeling — Canoeing and Fun in the Sun
While snorkeling is the main attraction, Lipah Beach also offers other activities like canoeing. It’s a great way to explore the calm waters and enjoy the view from a different angle. Although you can’t catch the sunset from here like at Jemeluk, Lipah Beach is perfect for a day full of fun and relaxation.
Final Thoughts—A Top Daytime Spot for Snorkeling (Overall Rating: ⭐️4.8/5)
We give Lipah Beach a strong 4.8 out of 5 stars, higher than its 4.4 rating on Google Reviews and 4.5 on TripAdvisor. The only reason for the small deduction is the absence of a sunset view, but for daytime activities like snorkeling, canoeing, and relaxing, Lipah Beach is one of the best spots in Amed. The coral reefs are stunning, and the peaceful atmosphere makes it a great place to unwind.
So, if you’re planning a trip to Amed, make sure to add Lipah Beach to your list. It’s a hidden gem that offers an unforgettable snorkeling experience and a perfect escape during the day!
General Information
Lipah Beach, located on Bali’s northeastern coast in the village of Amed, is a stunning destination known for its tranquil atmosphere, black volcanic sand, and crystal-clear waters. Situated about a 20-minute drive from Jemeluk Bay, Lipah Beach is often quieter and less crowded than other popular snorkeling spots in Amed, making it a perfect escape for those seeking peace and natural beauty.
Unique Black Sand Beach
One of Lipah Beach’s most intriguing features is its cyclical black sand, which appears and disappears throughout the year. Due to the strong seasonal currents and tides, the beach experiences a natural phenomenon where its volcanic sand is swept away for approximately six months and returns for the remaining half of the year. This dynamic shoreline creates a different landscape depending on the season, making each visit a unique experience.
The black sand itself is a product of the island’s volcanic activity, particularly from nearby Mount Agung. The sand, rich in minerals, gives the beach an otherworldly appearance, contrasting beautifully with the clear, turquoise water.
Snorkeling and Underwater Life
Lipah Beach is renowned for its excellent snorkeling conditions, with its vibrant coral reef located just a short distance from the shore. The calm and shallow waters are ideal for snorkelers of all levels. The reef is home to an array of colorful marine life, including butterflyfish, parrotfish, angelfish, and even sea turtles. The coral formations at Lipah Beach are well-preserved, with many visitors remarking that the coral here appears even healthier and more vibrant than at Jemeluk Bay
Renting snorkeling gear is easy, with local vendors offering equipment and guided tours. You can also rent glass-bottomed canoes to get a closer view of the reef without getting wet. The visibility underwater is excellent, making it a paradise for underwater photography.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Lipah Beach is during the dry season (April to October) when the water is calm, and the sand is fully visible. While the beach can be visited year-round, the black sand is most prominent during this time, providing a stunning visual contrast to the clear ocean waters.
During high tide, much of the beach may disappear, but low tide reveals the full extent of its shoreline. This makes low tide the best time to visit if you want to enjoy a full beach day of sunbathing, snorkeling, or exploring the area.
Other Activities
While snorkeling is the main attraction, Lipah Beach also offers other leisure activities. You can rent canoes to explore the coastline or simply relax on one of the sunbeds offered by local beach resorts. If you’re in the mood for some pampering, there are also beachfront massage services available. The beach lacks the hustle and bustle of other tourist-heavy areas, making it perfect for quiet relaxation
Dining and Accommodation
Lipah Beach is home to a few beachfront resorts and warungs (small local eateries) that offer fresh seafood and traditional Indonesian meals. One popular option is Vienna Beach Resort, which offers parking and direct beach access. Dining with a view of the ocean is a common feature at these warungs, and visitors can enjoy delicious meals while watching the gentle waves roll in.
For accommodation, there are several mid-range and budget-friendly options nearby, ranging from homestays to small resorts. Staying at a beachfront resort offers direct access to Lipah Beach, making it easy to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere at any time of day.
How to Get to Lipah Beach
Lipah Beach is located approximately 2.5 to 3 hours from Bali’s main tourist areas like Kuta, Seminyak, or Ubud. To reach the beach, the most convenient option is to rent a scooter or car. The scenic drive takes you through rural villages and offers breathtaking views of Mount Agung and the surrounding rice fields.
Alternatively, public transportation in the form of local buses is available, but it is less frequent and can require some planning ahead. Amed is a popular area for snorkeling and diving, so organized tours often include stops at Lipah Beach as part of their itineraries.
Whether you come for the snorkeling or the peaceful beach vibes, Lipah Beach remains one of Amed’s hidden gems—a must-visit for anyone exploring Bali’s northeastern coast.
