Pura Tirta Empul Temple
Temple Layout and Key Features
Pura Tirta Empul follows a traditional Balinese temple layout, consisting of three main sections:
- Jaba Pura (Outer Courtyard) – This is the entrance area where visitors prepare before entering the temple grounds. Here, you can find ticket booths, sarong rental stations, and small shrines.
- Jaba Tengah (Middle Courtyard & Purification Pools) – The highlight of the temple, this section features the famous purification pools with 30 stone fountains fed by the sacred spring. Worshippers and visitors line up under these fountains to perform the melukat cleansing ritual, where they submerge their heads under each spout to purify their body, mind, and soul. The ritual is performed with offerings and prayers, following specific traditions.
- Jeroan (Inner Courtyard & Holy Shrines) – This is the most sacred part of the temple, reserved for prayer and offerings. It houses several shrines dedicated to Hindu deities, as well as the natural spring from which the sacred water originates. The water flows continuously from underground and is considered a divine gift.
The Legend Behind Tirta Empul
According to Balinese mythology, the holy spring at Pura Tirta Empul was created by the god Indra to counteract the poisoned water used by the evil king Mayadenawa. It is believed that the sacred water restored Indra’s warriors and continues to provide healing and purification to those who visit. This legend gives the temple deep spiritual significance in Balinese Hindu beliefs.
